basement "before" documentation
part of the problem in the basement is lighting, so these flash photos are actually showing me things more clearly than i've been able to see them until now.
after working in the basement this weekend, i was feeling energized and encouraged to deal with it. i decided i can try some DIY stuff to reduce the water intrusion, and it won't really hurt. i can always give up later and call in the professionals if i need to, but since i have no desire to turn this into a finished room, i don't need to make it bone dry... just stop the damage.
the photos are making me feel a little more discouraged though.
anyway. goals are to get the water intrusion level down; seal the floor; paint the walls; restore or replace the door to the outside; take out that shower stall thing; restore or replace the windows; build some good shelving and work space.
i think the old hollow wood doors that i've removed from the living area will make great work benches. removing the shower stall will mean i can put an L - shaped bench under that far window-- which happens to be one of the dryest parts of the basement. natural light and no water intrusion! might need to add some power outlets and definitely some lighting...

I'm really impressed with your basement project. I'm a wuss about nasty jobs like that: I've been procrastinating about insulating my attic for years.

thanks! well, i have been procrastinating on this job for five years now. that, and learning what needed to be done.
once i get started on something though, i want to keep going with it. i'm excited by the possibilities of the basement and the chance to really make a large improvement and change in the house.

ok, so a) your comment won't post right away because i have to approve it first and b) you might get a server error but your comment probably posted anyway and c) previewing doesn't work so i've removed the preview button.
