night and rain

around 9:30 last night, i crashed. couldn't keep my eyes open. tried to for a while, because i knew how this would unfold. finally gave in, went to bed way too early.

so now i'm up (as i knew i would be), awakened not only by the odd sleep schedule, but a nightmare about being hunted by men with guns through an astounding old eurpean apartment building of which i was so fortunate to be a resident; and a dream of eating sand. (i was thirsty.)

the cat, of course, is beside himself with delight at my late night wakefulness. is it really breakfast if i give it to him at 2:30 in the morning? he really shouldn't even be fed, since he caught a vole last night and added it to his dinner. i swear, he was outside for all of ten minutes. the damn thing must have been sitting on the back porch steps, sunning itself and just waiting to be consumed by a passing feline.

anyway, i'm hoping i can go back to sleep, and that the cat will snuggle with me since he's been fed.

the tremendous sound of water running through my basement, with fans and the dehumidifier running seemed to contribute to my wakefulness as well. the rushing sound coming from below me seemed bigger than usual, and i felt the need to go check it out. i think i was so sleepy still that i couldn't separate out the sound of rain when i tried to parse the sound i was hearing.

i have to say, i do love me some rain at night. if i'm going to be wakeful at this time, at least let there be rain to listen to.

update @ 9:26am: (because i know you're on the edge of your seat, waiting to find out if i fell back asleep!) amazingly, i fell asleep again quite readily, cat in place, rain sounding nice and everything. kitty woke me up at seven and i walked him out to his bowl to show him that the food was already there. (oh, he of little brain.)

fell back asleep then til eight at which point i realized i had better get up, though it was insanely difficult. i still feel quite groggy and out of it, more a function of the odd sleep schedule than not getting enough sleep.

the am dj on xdu made my morning, though-- especially the lee hazelwood song.
