...and now we are fifteen.
if memory serves, moses was born at the end of June 1991, which means that he turns fifteen this week.
this seems to be the age where things start to go awry for cats, but moseman appears to be a pretty healthy kitty. he went to the vet this morning for his yearly checkup, and has lost another pound in the last six months! he is now down to 16.8-- the last time he was below 17 lbs was 1998. the cosequin (feline glucosamine) is keeping him active.
i'm waiting now for his blood panel to come back-- if there are kidney problems, we'll know about it today. but i'm pretty hopeful that he's just as healthy as he appears to be.
happy birthday moseman!

Hey Lisa! Tell Moses I said happy birthday! I'm so glad his panels are normal. What do you feed him? Must be something good. I ask because I lost Alex to kidney failure at 12 and Mouffle to intestinal cancer at 14 and I swear I think it has a lot to do with what they ate. I've done a bunch of research on food since they got sick and want to feed my new kitty (Mofu, born last august) raw but haven't quite made the leap yet. I just feed him a high quality canned (Wellness) at the moment. Man, I forgot what it's like to have a kitten around! He's like a little rocket! I keep saying "when are you gonna be a lazy old man?" There's nothing sweeter than an old cat or dog. They just seem so peaceful and wise. I wish I had you around to take pictures of him. The best pictures of Alex and Mou taken in their entire lives were the ones you took when we lived in that house with Herbert. Remember the picture of Mouffle in your mixing bowl?

he has been on some form of Hill's dry foods almost all of his life. first to combat UT infections, then later for weight loss. right now he's on m/d which is basically a low carb diet for cats. it's harder on the kidneys than is ideal, but my vet says that as long as he is losing the weight, the weight is a lot worse for him than the food and we should keep him on it. but that's the main reason i was a little anxious about the blood panel. m/d is so dense in protien and fat that i only give him about 4 tablespoons a day.
i do agree that diet is probably the culprit for cancers and kidney problems in cats. grocery store food is full of bizarre crap. hopefully hill's is a little better. ideally, i'd feed him fresh foods, of course, but i don't see that happening :)
