tell me about your favorite cake!
my mom's birthday is saturday and she has given me complete creative control over her birthday cake!
i'm looking for ideas. she likes fruit flavors, coconut, nuts, but she cannot tolerate chocolate very well, especially dark chocolate. cheesecake is also a good option and in fact i have a really nice springform pan that i've only used once, so i'd enjoy doing a cheesecake.
given the many sweet teeth reading this blog, i am sure you guys can hook me up with a good idea or two!

I can give you the recipe for that cake I made for Georg's birthday last year, but I warn you it literally took a full day to make: I did nothing but work on that cake all day. If you did it over several days (baked the layers and made the icing in advance and so forth) it might be more manageable.

i don't think i have a full day to spend on a cake :) nor do i really want anything that complicated anyway. more opportunities for problems.
she does like lemon, raspberry, blueberry, and probably almost any other fruit flavor you can think of.

I'm not a cake baker, but I can tell you that a moist yellow cake with raspberry between the layers and white frosting on top is really, really good!

karen barker's dessert cookbook has a pretty yummy-looking lemon custard cake--i've gone through a few of my cookbooks but mostly i make cookies and breads and muffins and things, and so i can't really verify the awesomeness of any of these cake recipes. you have inspired me to go buy a cakepan, though.
