foodie - not

i'd never, ever claim to be a foodie. it comes as no suprise that georg has tried far more things on this list than i have. however, i would like to note that most of the things i have not tried are exotic meats, most of which i will probably not want to try because i have not been socialized since birth to believe that it is ok to eat these particular dead animals. in other words, although i have accepted that meat eating is a necessity for me, i am still enough of a vegetarian at heart that there are very, very few animals that i am willing to eat, and they are the ones that i was trained to eat from birth-- chickens, pigs, cows, fish.

so here are the foods i've not tried:

i'll freely admit to having been at least in part an emotional vegetarian and it appears that i still am.

It's not just you, that list is awful meat-heavy. I can think of a few things that are veggie and challenging (natto comes to mind right away, and some stinky cheeses) that aren't on the list.

We will be going to Ecuador in March, and they have been eating guinea pig in Ecuador since pre-columbian times. I like to always try the local food wherever I go, but I think I may be with you on this one--I just don't think I want to.

Octopus and squid are delicious, IMO.

durian is a southeast asian fruit that reportedly stinks to high heaven. It supposedly tastes really really good, if you can get past the smell. I've heard the smell is so strong that many hotels have "no durian" rules because if someone eats durian in their room, that whole part of the hotel smells.

of all the things on that list i've tried, i don't really regret any, even the ones i didn't particularly enjoy. but i've tried natto, and frankly, i think i could've happily lived my life w/o that little taste treat

oh yeah, natto is revolting. Plus we looked like idiots ordering it at a sushi bar and then being unable to eat more than a bite. That's really what I regret more than having tried it.

I've had all but seven. Then again, my people aren't "from around here."

Durian, as Sarah mentions, is the food that "smells like hell and tastes like heaven." So says my Dad. I don't particularly care for it when fresh. But there is a candied durian preserve that I kind of like. Indeed, many venues (including airplanes) do not allow the consumption of fresh durian. Which is why my parents once gorged on about a pound of the stuff (no easy trick) at the Bangkok airport. Added bonus: the outside is a hard shell with hundreds of spiky bumps. Think medieval weaponry.

A former boss says that the distinction between tentacled beasts is "squid is like eating fried rubber bands. octopus is like eating boiled tires."

I'd love to try the haggis. Especially if I could talk like Groundskeeper Willie through the whole meal.
