Glassworks
Listening to a podcast of what I suspect is next week's This American Life, I hear the unmistakable strains of music by Ira David Glass' cousin, Philip Glass.
Nice.

that's one hot platter!
Picture from WDBS, which is what WXDU was before it was WXDU. The turntable in the photo doesn't quite appear to be the same as the one I have from the station, but it's of the same ilk.

WKNC dj "discovers" local music
Steve Salevan provides a home for local music on the airwaves
Ross Grady (of WXDU) gets a one-line mention. WXYC's decades-long devotion to local music is skipped entirely.
Ross Grady? His local music show started at WKNC. Back when they were nothing but metal.
Whatever. At least they finally woke up and smelt the music scene. They get a cookie.

twice
this is the second time someone i knew from wxdu wound up on b2. this time it's someone i never knew well, although he seriously dated one of my friends from the station. he's being mentioned in a complimentary way.
the first time was someone i did know pretty well and he was mentioned on b2 in a very un-complimentary way.
so go figure.

also, i meant to play "blue oyster cult" by shonen knife, because their drummer died yesterday, and i played that song on either my xdu aircheck tape or on my very first radio show on wqfs. but i forgot.

one hot show
holy sweating dj's batman! it's gotta be at least three hundred degrees up here in the main studio!
i really didn't have my wits about me to come up with something that coherent during my show tonight, but if i had, i would have.
obviously, i still don't really have it together.
also, one of the web streams was fuxored, so on the off chance that any far-away people tried to listen to my show, i apologize if you were unable.
also, i cannot speak the good english. i know this. you should have heard my voice breaks.
toward the very end of my show, i started to feel dizzy. that's how hot it was.
i am home now and resting comfortably with a tall glass of ice water. what i can't understand is why i didn't get any chocolate product of any sort when i went grocery shopping last. i'm actually having serious thoughts of sallying forth to find some somewhere, although i am sure that would be very unwise and i should just stay home.
but i really want some chocolate.
i have this whole thing i'm going to write about how my record collection sucks, but maybe i'll wait until i can sort of put together sentences again.

radio, radio
it's funny, i sort of dread doing my radio show, despite enjoying the hell out of it whenever i'm actually on the air. last night was mostly fun. it turns out that i'm a total sucker for ethiopian music, but then, anyone who listens to my show regularly had probably figured that out. i figure no one listens regularly so i can get away with indulging myself to some degree. that, and i'm probably one of maybe three people who are likely to play ethiopian music during their show.
so indeed, i broke out the soundtrack to 'broken flowers', which is on playlist right now, fully intending to not play one of the ethiopian pieces, and dutifully scanned through many songs, and played "yegelle tezeta" anyway.
i played the new eno, too. those who get the reference in my blog name may have guessed that i'm an eno fan. however, at this point i'm more a fan of the man himself than his current work. happily, this new release is not strictly ambient and the track i played was actually really nice.
things fell apart in the last twenty minutes, as they usually do after josh arrives. i like josh a lot and i've rarely come on the air before a more entertaining (and reliable) person, but he can't help but be distracting, and the end of my show is the time when i'm struggling to hold it together anyway. he was nice and tried to help me locate my one request of the evening (a request that helped me understand why i never much took to the grifters.. ugh), but by the time his annoying young companion had arrived and started pounding me with questions about how my show works, i was pretty cranky and probably wasn't super nice to her. i don't think she noticed.
i did receive one fairly entertaining phone call from a man who demanded to know, "is that sid?" after playing a little game of "who's on first", we determined that he thought that a song i played sounded like syd barrett. and the beatles. i was left wondering how an xdu listener could have such a narrow range of reference.

looking like i'll be doing the wrrld show this saturday from 1-3pm. it'll be a chance to break out the funky reggae i couldn't use for FDDF, because it was trapped on a dead hard drive. thanks to steph i've got my iTunes fully restored to the state it was in before the crash, including the ratings i'd put on songs from d.'s massive collection, so i know which ones i wanted to play.
i was also on air last night but didn't feel like publicizing it in advance.
slow night.
oh, except for rick! visiting briefly and the fact that Baby Huey (who does DEAD OF THE NIGHT, our (gasp) metal show, after me), got erstwhile xdu training director p. lee to sub for him. snork. those of you priveleged to know mr. lee will appreciate how humorous this was to witness. happily he also brought a pal, a scrawny milquetoast sort of fellow dressed in something like a beige t-shirt, beige close-fitting athelic shorts, fully extended white athletic knee socks and trainers, and who bore something like fifteen different piercings in his ears.
mr. lee said to me, "and the new Harry Potter needs to come out RIGHT NOW." some of us are getting a little impatient, are we??
i have to admit, although i won't be going to the regulator at midnight or anything, well, i might stop in there saturday afternoon...

lost songs
there are a few songs, just a very few songs that i once had access to through some emphemeral means (an album on loan from a now out of touch friend, a cassette recording that is lost or destroyed now) and have not been able to identify and locate through the magick of the interwebnet.
one of them i did find tonight; it is "persian love" by holger czukay and there's a sample of it on amazon, just enough to confirm that i want to hear that song again, but not enough to pay amazon price for the whole cd. of course, it's not on iTunes. maybe the station has it. i knew it originally through one of the old WOMAD compilations of the 80's, and only knew that it was by czukay and that it sampled a shortwave broadcast from the middle east.
funny thing is, i found it because someone else who was looking for it, and found it in a much more unlikely way, posted his story of finding it on this holger czukay guestbook. (find on WOMAD to see his post.)
the other one is a song i've never been able to identify. i recorded a snippet of it off WXYC while i was in high school, probably in 1984 or 85. i haven't been able to find the cassette it was on for some years now, or i would have digitized it and made all my friends listen to it.
i think the band sounds a little bit like the three o'clock, but no searches through three o'clock discographies or lyrics sites yield any results. the only lyric i remember went something like, "Julie's not Julie anymore."
oh, and there's a shrimp boat song that i once had a dream to that i've never been able to find. but since all shrimp boat songs sound basically the same, that's ok.

i am the operator
show tonight turned into the lisa feels goth self indugence two hours and change because the next dj was late. very very very very glad i am the one who first used the BRSP up there because i encountered some apalling usability problems on that computer that i'd not found on my laptop. got myself into a few fixes i almost couldn't get out of. anyone else would have had to give up and go to paper.
quite gratifying, however, to get many messages on the request line. apparently my self-indugence went over well. a couple of messages from an assistant professor at notre dame, believe it or not.
rather startled to find 'the ipcress file' being recorded just now on tivo. also quite annoyed to find that one of the queer as folk discs i spent my carefully budgeted dollars on renting last night is just special features-- no episodes. dammit. i heart emmett. i was hoping for more emmett.
now trying out some kewl technology dreamed up by jason! and brought to life by il rossi. it allows me to download a recording of my show from a sekrit location on the xdu web site. now i just have to find a way to convert it from ogg to mp3.

it's radio, only much more complicated.
the airport express arrived this week, and this evening i have finally had a chance to work through configuring it. configuration wasn't difficult but it was less intuitive than apple products normally are. an ipod this is not. it can do many things, all of them network-ey and therefore not necessarily apparent to normal humans.
i've got it set up now to do bridging from my existing airport network (this means my airport signal is crazy strong in the living room, and that i don't have to have the express plugged into an ethernet cable). it's also set up to do airtunes, the feature i bought it for.
now hopefully the cube can use the fast wired network connection while also sending music over the airport network, but i've yet to determine that. the cube is busy recording right now and i don't want to disturb it.
just to make things interesting, i am currently sending music that actually resides on the cube to the airport express via my powerbook. itunes has a feature called rendezvous that will automatically share itunes libraries between computers on the same network, so the powerbook can access the cube's itunes library that way, and play any of that music.
since the music i am playing is actually sarah's radio show from last week, it's really rather eerie. i'm listening to xdu on my stereo as always... except that it's a week old show and it's making two hops over a wireless network to get to the stereo, instead of being beamed directly into my receiver via the magick of radio.
i've had a cabling problem with my stereo and tv for a while now, and the airport express isn't helping. i'm gonna have to disassemble my whole setup one of these days and get the cabling straightened out. i guess i've been putting this off because it'll involve drilling more holes in the cabinet. and i might need to face the idea of drilling holes in my floor, to really do it right. that, and i'm slack.

the tkdf project
many years ago, i was involved in an improvisational audio collage show on wxdu. personnel were typically jason!, ian rothwell, and me, although the cast rotated and we had folks come in and help from time to time.
ian is a very meticulous person and he taped every show. each tape was carefully labelled with the name of that week's show, the date, and the show number. at some point, he divided the tapes three ways and we each received a set. i believe we were supposed to sift through the tapes, identify the best sections, and possibly compile them in some kind of digitized form.
i've always intended to follow through with this project, but software (and motivation) has been an issue. i recently found a blog post about digitizing and editing old cassettes that finally pointed me in the right direction and i've got two apps that seem to work and have the features i need. Audio Recorder for sound capture, and Audacity for editing. Audacity has a visual representation of the sound waves, which I need for editing... i can't navigate sound without a visual. Just the way my brain works.
so last night i captured the first tape, show #4, recorded on may 31, 1996. this show may be so early that it's only ian... jason and i joined up after ian had done a few shows by himself, i think.
i always thought of it as unlistenable-- something that was immensely fun to do, but probably hell to actually hear on the radio. but as i sit here listening to this show, i find that i don't want to stop. it's more mesmerizing than irritating. i don't think it's because i was involved... i have no memory of this particular show, i don't even know if i was there when it was created. having done the show probably affected the way i listen to music in general... i know i probably have a higher than average tolerance for music that many people would consider to be "just noise". but much of what i am hearing right now isn't too far off from what i hear on xdu's playlist these days. it's kind of nice, actually.
i'm not sure how possible it will be to pull out sections of a show, but i think i still want to try to do that. i could also make entire shows available for download in mp3 form if anyone wants them.
i also have a lot of photos that i took during shows that i should scan. i was the main photographer, which means that i don't appear in many photos. that kind of pisses me off... because there were so few women working in audio collage at that time (maybe none?). because we never speak during the shows, without the photos, the people involved kind of disappear, there is no record of who was involved except in our own memories and the photos. i do have this one picture. it was taken by our old black & white webcam, reflecting off the minidisc player (a cool camera angle invented by jim haverkamp).
anyway, i'm hoping that i'll continue to follow through with this and come up with an end product that i could give to the station for our library. maybe it could even go on our playlist for a while-- that would be cool.
:|:
update: here's an excerpt from show #4. excerpt #1, 2.6mb, mp3 format, and just for jason! excerpt #1, 3.3mb, ogg format.

back to sub-land
well, i decided to go back to being a sub for this semester. my plan is to ask for a regular shift again in the winter.
i've pretty much decided that i do want to do something to help the starlite, though i'll need to talk to those avon ladies first i think before i plan anything!
so that, coupled with nbeast, work on my house and yard, the halloween party, the old north durham web site, many long-promised but never delivered items for the radio station web site (like, a new web site ), and the westy, means that i could use an extra evening free every other week.
it all kind of culminates in october, or at least nbeast (which is driving certain aspects of the westy project) and the halloween party (which is driving a lot of the house stuff) do, so my hope is that i'll be nearly bored in november and december. or else i'll be completely burnt out and unable to do anything but watch re-runs of "mad about you" on tv.

ugly americans reunion tonight
wow, my head just exploded. ross just posted to ch-scene that there's an ugly americans reuinion tonight.
now, i don't really have a handle on which hardcore bands i actually saw when i was 15 and 16 and stuff. i know the circle jerks was one of them; the ugly americans were almost certainly another, though i have no specific memories of them.
i did not know that chris eubank had been in the ugly americans.
i do know that we used to call simon bob sinister "semen blob" and that a lot of people hated him. and that he tried to date all the girls but was a playa and broke a lot of hearts.
i think i knew that danny hooley was in the band. danny is great. get him to show you his awesome full arm tattoo if you've never seen it.
will i go? i dunno. i mean, i sure want to, but logistically it might not work out.

good show!
it was one of those radio shows where i feel unprepared, but somehow it winds up being a good show anyhow. i think playlist and i are agreeing pretty well right now; basically, there's tons of non-boring world music, which is mostly what i like to play these days. and happily, it all recorded just fine and i'm listening to it via iPod right now!
not a single call or email, except for this one guy who kept bugging me to send him a message over the web cam. :)
i've been working on my voicebreaks, and i think i'm finally meeting with success. when i'm speaking, it feels artificially slow and deliberate, but i hardly said "um" at all, and everything i said seems to have been lucid and "legible".

safe
got home safely from my radio show.. roads were still more wet & slushy than frozen over at 10pm. thanks to christa for the broad/club/washington idea; it was definitely less scary than markham.
tomorrow work opens at 10:30. dave is still stuck; both his driveway and his cul de sac are heavily sloped sheets of ice. so he's going to climb out on foot and i'll pick him up on a cross street on my way in.
i finally got my first mp4 archive of my radio show. i'm a bit disappointed because i went on early, but forgot to change the recording schedule to start early, so i missed a lot of good stuff.
i'm debating on posting it to the web. i wouldn't put it on the radio station web server-- the files aren't small and i don't want to cause legal trouble for the station. but i'm wondering just how illegal it would be, really, to post it to the web.

i also found a copy of "this is reggae music, part 2". i've had my hands on the first volume for a few years; there's a great lorna bennett song that i play from time to time called "breakfast in bed". well, i listened to part 2 for the first time last night, and was amused to discover a response to her song, by her husband! (the song is all about infedelity, although it sounds as if lorna's male visitor is the person cheating on his wife or girlfriend, with no mention of lorna's own status). i have to say, though, it's an awfully good-natured response. it's hard to understand what he's saying-- he's basically just talking over a recording of her song, in a thick jamaican accent. after responding to lorna for a while, he starts berating the guy who is with him in the recording studio (also in a fairly good-natured way).

working girl
i'm watching 'working girl' on tv.
the first time i saw it was in the theater when it was released. i saw it with a very strange guy that i met through the radio station in greensboro. he didn't work at the station; he was a listener.
he had this bizarre fixation on women with very pale, translucent skin. i'm pretty sure he was actually gay.
he didn't like the movie, but i sure did.

enough radio to choke a large horse
i did two shows today... 2 - 4pm and 8 - 10pm.
it was very quiet, though at the end of the second show i did have someone call to ask what the last few songs were, which was gratifying.
and jason had a kind word.
bendte arrived for her 10pm show sporting a new haircut; we both go to the same guy to get our hair cut. she said their inspiration for how he did the back was that scene in 16 candles when the girl gets her hair caught in the door and her friend cuts the hair off to free her.
she cracks me up.
i also talked to sylvia in the afternoon, about thrift stores and, oddly, horseback riding. i also gave her some advice on men, but she probably won't take it.

radio hangout time
did a radio show last night. and who should be there when i arrived but mark, betsy, and baby oscar! he's the hippest toddler since penny brought her baby jake up to the station. and a very good baby too, hardly made a peep. and his hair is RED RED RED!
shortly after i went on, jonathan and susan came by and hung out with me during my show.
jonathan does a show at kbcs in seattle and susan was involved in college radio as well.

radio lisa
as anticipated, there was no 12-3am dj after me last night, so i continued on until 2am. i almost completely ignored playlist, and as is always the case when i do that, i got calls from people saying that they liked what i was playing. i'm sorry to the xdu music directors-- but that just doesn't happen when i do a playlist-heavy show.
in fact, i originally decided to call it quits at 1:30am, and announced that over the air. a guy immediately called me and begged me to stay on. i'm easy; that's all it really takes. i stayed on til 2. he called again at 2 and tried to convince me to stay on longer, but i had already started shutting things down and i was pretty loopy-- too loopy to really do a good job, actually.
one of the reasons i largely ignored playlist was because i'd sifted through my entire vinyl collection and a good chunk of my cd's and had brought quite a bit of my own music with me. i even broke out this steve reich box set ("drumming") that i almost never play. it turned out to be an excellent way to start the show-- it mixes with virtually anything, even the "all robert earle keene, all the time" hour that preceded me-- and sheds a lot of light on the glenn branca track we've currently got on playlist. branca was so clearly listening to this stuff when he started out, probably that exact piece in fact.
bendte told me recently that she likes to listen to my show because i give some background on the music i play. i really had not noticed that i was doing that; i don't go into a lot of detail, but every once in a while i'll have an interesting tidbit to share. i hate it when dj's go on at great length about the personnel on a record or boring stuff like that, so i usually try to keep the info to tidbit length. but since she's said that, i've let myself go a little more and am probably more likely to share a little.
i did make a very interesting discovery while on air last night. i played a track from this joe meek comp that i play almost every week lately, and realized the lyrics were oddly familiar. turns out that one of my all-time favorite songs by the fall, "o, brother", is a cover of this song. the original is "little baby" by the rondos, and the lyrics make a hell of a lot more sense when you replace "oh, little brother" with "oh, little baby". crazy old mark e. smith.
steve reich popped up again later in the show; there's a dub cd by weevie on playlist right now, and i was startled to find that one of the tracks was called "bruise blood dub" and had a little notation next to it which said "come out to show them". well, that's from a very early reich track, in fact it's on "early works". sure enough, the weevie song samples from reich (who was himself sampling when he composed that). i'll have to bring "early works" with me next time i'm on air and play the two together.

i'll be on air tonight from 10-midnight. actually, it might run a little longer, because i'm not sure the 12-3am dj got a sub.

playlist will be here
you can look forward to... rasputina... a song from the "fire walk with me" soundtrack... probably the black girls and hugo largo to round out the chicks with string instruments in rock bands theme... and to continue the chicks with string instruments theme (though in this case, it's not rock) a track from composer ellen fullman on her "long string instrument" -- i met her this summer.
and who knows what else :) maybe some senor coconut, some what peggy wants (for the violin)

busting on bust
i generally love bust magazine , but there's an article in the most recent issue that pissed me off.
it's about the women of independent NJ radio station WFMU . i'll probably write bust a letter, but at the moment i think i'm gonna work out some thoughts in blog form.
this is one of the bits that i really object to:
"Maybe the techniness of radio has been daunting to women, or maybe the utter guy-ish-ness of record collecting has slowed their entry into the field, along with a helping of good old-fashioned marginalization and sexism."
now take this in combination with the fact that the article mentions college radio only once:
"Nearly every one of the on-air women has a background in college radio..."
and doesn't ever mention any other form of non-commercial radio (NPR? hello?), internet radio, pirate radio, microchannel... and whatever else i'm forgetting, so the premise that there's a lack of women in radio, except in certain types of roles which mainstream radio forces them into, is not a very well supported or well inspected one.
even if it were supported, the theories the author advances for why this might be are really pretty offensive.
now of course, my experience of radio is pretty much limited to college, and my personal experience extends mainly to wqfs, wxdu, and to some limited degree wxyc and wknc.
however, i can assure you that wqfs and wxdu have not had a lack of women involved at all levels for at least the last... um 15 years? and this article is all congratulatory toward wfmu because they've got a handful of female dejays now as compared to almost none five years ago.
"The other day, five of us gals were all in one of the studios together and it nearly blew station manager Ken [Freedman]'s mind," says Kelly. "He'd never seen that many girls in one place at the station before."
Oh, good for you, FMU. Five girls in ONE PLACE at ONE TIME! You deserve an article!
