i had serious thoughts this morning of not having a party this year, but i think i do that every year. i may have to coat the clutter in fake cobwebs, but you know, whatever. it's SCARY clutter! right, that's it!

costumes always appreciated, never required. i always lay on lots of food and booze, or BYO if you want something in particular.

it's better than that lame party we went to the one year i didn't throw a party

this is really the reason i throw a halloween party every year. because one year i didn't, and sarah and georg and i went to that guy's lame party, and years later we're still cracking up over how totally and completely lame that party was.

the stark overhead lighting, the way all food items had been embargoed to the chairless dining room, the squat woman who berated me for being insufficiently costumed, even the preposterous invitation which required one to click through twenty pointless screens before revealing the date and time of the party... yeah.

even if my party is me, georg and sarah sitting around my kitchen playing with eyeball wind-up toys and eating gingerbread, it's a better party than that one.

besides, i've got all these eyeballs and stuff...

sarah came over tonight and helped me decorate which was pretty awesome, because having an enthusiastic helper makes it way more fun, and i'm much more likely to actually use the majority of my stuff.

it was also rather amusing to see how she was both horrified by yet compelled to inspect certain items, like the squishy eyeballs, and the zombie candle hand thing. you know, where you burn each of the fingers and they drip red wax like blood and there's a fake skeleton underneath?

that was a good one.

rituals

today i went to the farmer's market to buy pumpkins, the most hideous gourds i could find, and this year, mums.

i actually tried to leave without visiting the seafood restaurant, but caved at the last moment. it's "calabash style", which means that if it's not slaw, it's fried. and probably someone somewhere has figured out how to fry slaw, too.

god, it was good. and it's part of my yearly fall ritual.

this is perhaps the most ritualized time of year, for me. there are certain movies i like to watch, foods i like to eat, things i like to do.

parties i like to throw.

i like it.

perish of fits! perish of fits!

i've been neglecting the halloween content this month, sadly, so many thanks to the house of dioxin for the link to gashlycrumb tinies quiz. i am happy to report that my result was one of my top two favorite tinies, "perish of fits". the other one being "died of ennui".

the weekend.

by saturday i didn't feel sick anymore and not too tired. i never did get the eyeball collection down from the attic, and i never did carve my pumpkins, but everyone said the house looked nice anyway, that night at the party. i pinned my hair up wet and threw on some party clothes just before il rossi arrived early, intending to make himself look more goth with my eye makeup, which was not really up to the job. with his glasses, i said he looked like dead buddy holly, which would be a cool costume except that he didn't quite have the props to sell it. so he washed off the gray smudge under his eyes.

some folks wore costumes and others did not. hopefully this had the effect of making everyone comfortable with the level of costuming they had chosen.

upon taking inventory the next day, it appears that wine was the popular drink of the evening, followed closely by gin and tonics. only a small percentage of the beer was consumed. i thought perhaps if i provided nice beer... but no, beer is still not the beverage of choice. the fresca was decimated. almost no one drank regular Coke.

now there is candy in the house, until tomorrow, and potato chips, two foods i never normally keep around. i will be glad to see them both go. junk food and i do not make good roommates.

sunday i was tired, tired, tired. the extra hour was a boon; it gave me another hour to perk up (which eventually, i did) and sarah came over to practice photographing a person. afterwards she was kind enough to invite me over for dinner, which was very yummy.

now my body is protesting the return to a normal schedule. i have to go.

SPOOOOOKY!

after cleaning the house furiously (or at least intently) for the last two evenings, i feel tentatively hopeful that we can look forward to the following at the party:

The Room of Mystical Divination. I wasn't sure if I could get the back bedroom ready, but as of bedtime last night, there was open floor space and the sofa was accessible by humans. I even vacuumed! A lot!

The Caravan of Eyeballs. Since this is the Charming English Cottage of Death, the van of course becomes a caravan, and it will likely be home to the Eyeball Collection.

There may be more to come... but I don't want to promise things and not deliver. I am hopeful that I'll have a chance to execute an idea i've had for years though. whee!

[halloweenies] tim burton

the creepy fairylands that emanate from tim burton's mind are one of the best ways to boot oneself into a state of total halloweenie-ness, should one feel lacking during the month of october.

here i've chosen his most halloweenie-esque movies, just in case you're not familiar with burton and need some suggestions.

far and away the most halloweenie of them all is "the nightmare before christmas", which is the only one here that burton didn't actually direct. an added bonus to "nightmare" is that we get to hear danny elfman singing for the first time since oingo boingo. he has a great voice, and i realized when i first saw this movie how much i missed it after oingo boingo went away.

my second favorite is "sleepy hollow". i know a lot of folks would probably choose "beetle juice", or "edward scissorhands" (and of course, they're both high up in the pantheon), but i think the natural environments and the fact that it's a period piece are what do it for me. and, well, to be honest-- the dresses:
