Scirocco
Which VW Are You?
Maybe because I chose "unpredictable" as the word or phrase that best describes me. There's a reason that even I haven't ever put the Scirroco on the Short List of VW's I Want To Own.
Speaking of that list, today I spotted a diesel caddy-- the small pickup truck that VW made in the 80's. Now that bad boy is on the short list and has been for some time.. And I love the diesel logo that appears on this VW and no other. Sadly, this one's logo had fallen off, leaving just an outline in the paint. But the "Got 50 MPG?" sticker would have been enough to clue me in to the engine type.

My fencing teammate Alex Lee drove a Scirocco when we were in college and I remember being impressed with the way he whipped it around the streets of Boston while we were trying to find our way to Cambridge.
Two things I remembered from that drive with the normally taciturn Alex.
1. When he saw a billboard with Joe Camel and a bunch of human babes, he made a disgusted sound and condemned the allusion to beastiality.
2. When he saw a Hyundai ad, he made another disgusted sound and condemned anyone fool enough to buy one of those "pieces of crap".
Fast forward 5 years: I'm driving a rental Hyundai V6 compact around Chicago and feel like I'm trying to pilot a jet-powered potato chip. Still, I can feel the jet power.
Fast forward 18 years: Hyundai is now a much more reliable brand than Volkswagen. But damn, I love driving a V6 Jetta.

i remember looking into the scirocco once. all of the scirocco enthusiast sites say, "unless you're completely mad, get a corrado instead."
even the diesel westy people don't say that!
