that's life on the hellmouth

i've started watching my Buffy DVD's. i haven't wanted to watch Buffy at all in a few years, really, but now they're all fresh and new and awesome all over again.

mo-date

he's up to 17lbs now (dayum) and his blood sugar was quite high this morning. dr. c says he often sees hind leg weakness with high blood sugar, so the plan is to get the blood sugar under control and cut back on food so hopefully he'll lose some weight. and maybe we'll get him back on his feet again.

otherwise, he's doing pretty well.

geek alert

there's a job open in my department-- what we call webmaster-- the unix geeks who run the web servers.

alert all geeks. it's very rare that a webmaster job comes open. if you know a unix sysadmin type who is looking for a job and wants to work on the web, have them search for Systems Programmer on the job listings of my company... if you don't know what company i work for, post a comment and i'll mail you back.

your baby is not improving my commute

those of you who travel down the Durham Freeway regularly will know of what I speak.

the billboard overlooking the Freeway that reads...

"Colin James Jee - born whenver - Jee Whiz!"

with a big ole picture of an infant.

i look at it every morning, and wonder.

what the hell??

week's update

tasty treats at leith vw in cary: a showroom full of restored, vintage vw's! i was quite taken aback when i walked in yesterday. two buses and two or three bugs.

moses: seems to have bounced back for the most part, except that he still isn't strong enough to stand up on his own power. i've seen a definite uptick in his strength the last few days; today he's able to stand on his own briefly without support from me, if i stand him up. the yoga mat is very helpful as it keeps his feet from sliding once i get him up. baths are now a weekly routine and we are getting it down pat.

continued explorations of southwest durham: i uncover a neighborhood to add to the list almost every time i go out. there are a lot of quiet, wooded places out there if you look. i went back to trotter ridge today after dismissing it initially when i was first looking. in comparison to the newer subdivisions i've visited lately, it's far superior-- larger lots, lots and lots of trees, a very quiet feel. some swooping contemporaries that are really cool looking. it's back on the list.

olympics: i keep watching them.

work: i can make your web site not suck so much.

the mo report

so the report today is that his kidney values have gotten a little worse, and that's why he's been acting weird for the last week. but they're not so much worse that we need to do anything different, just be on the lookout for more loss of appetite.

he actually hasn't lost any weight, and at the moment he's sitting next to me enjoying a meal of stinky wet food and "meat water" (e.g., broth).

my vet gave me a pep talk about how with moses, we never know, he never does what's normal so maybe he will even get better again. well, i kind of doubt that but it is fun to have the cat that beats all the expectations and spits in the face of dire predictions and stuff.

in happier news, the woman who manages the office at the vet (who i really like a lot), brought her baby in to work today so everyone was having fun playing with the baby.

the cat on the (yoga) mat

it's been a difficult few days with the mo. i don't think it's the end yet, he's still too into food for that to be the case. but something's not right.

around friday or saturday he stopped walking altogether and could not even stand up with help from me. everything else was still pretty normal so my thinking right now is that it may be due to an injury. possibly due to low blood sugar. he's making some attempts this evening to stand up, but his feet keep slipping, so i've put him on my yoga mat. for those of you who have never used one, they are kind of sticky and help keep your bare feet from sliding.

the weirder problem is with food. he won't eat unless i literally put food under his face-- and then he eats hungrily. he can be just a few inches away from his food and water and will not even scoot over to eat it. i can rattle the dry food in the bowl and show it to him and he acts all excited, but won't move toward it. it's really frustrating.

it could simply be an appetite issue but he seems to eat a normal amount so i'm not sure about that.

anyway... we go in for a checkup wednesday so we'll see then. maybe his kidneys have finally gotten worse. maybe his diabetes is getting better. maybe he's just senile.

the fantasy haus

hey, do you guys remember when i was fantasizing about buying an old car dealership that was for sale near my house and turning it into living space? living space with FIVE GARAGE BAYS OMG?

well, that very place is featured on endangered durham today.

the many old caddies that were parked within it now seem to be gone. it should really become a restaurant or something.

Glassworks

Listening to a podcast of what I suspect is next week's This American Life, I hear the unmistakable strains of music by Ira David Glass' cousin, Philip Glass.

Nice.

Greystone & neighborhoods

This weekend J was in town and we visited Greystone as a potential wedding location.

It's a beautiful place. If you ever get the chance to stay there or visit, and love old Durham houses, I highly recommend it. It's the first place we've looked at where we got excited about the possibilities rather than being disappointed and crossing it off the list.

I don't know if we'll have the wedding there, but it's definitely a possibility.

We also visited some neighborhoods that I've uncovered in the last few weeks where we might like to live. While it would be great to stay close to downtown, the price per square foot around here can be really high by comparison, and we might not find the right place here.

It's kind of difficult to uncover these places if you're a devoted downtown dweller, as I am. It's like there's a whole other Durham that I didn't know was out there. A lot of it is very cookie-cutter and disappointing, but there are little pockets here and there that feel more laid back, have lots of trees and houses that don't all look the same.

Just in case someone reading this is in the same position, the places we like best are...

We also walked the dog around Watts-Hillandale on Saturday. While the houses have lots of character-- and I know they have a good time there on Halloween-- the lots are small and the price per square foot is astronomical. Ah well.

On Sunday we started the Map Project (well, continued it with my participation). J ordered USGS maps of the area and made devices to store them properly and hold acetate overlays. We cut the acetate to fit (my sewing tools came in handy-- cutting wheel and self-healing mat) and started marking neighborhoods and other important features on the acetate overlays.

Busy, busy...

Ringing my doorbell will not result in me giving you anything.

This includes, but is not limited to:

- My signature.
- My belief in your religion.
- Money, either for a dog, for work on your part, your alleged charity, or for no real reason at all.
- Access to my telephone, or my house.
- A glass of water.

If my fucking printer worked, i would print this off and post it to my front door.
