yes, i have to go to a cat birthday party
i'll admit, i didn't think of the position i'd be putting people in, if they needed to explain where they were going.
tonight i invited over a few of moses' most ardent local fans (aka, people who help me take care of him and will listen to me prattle on about him ad nauseum). (although i have to say that the person who is willing to listen to me the most is J, plus it should be mentioned that he also helps me with moses a lot. for instance, he played a key role in the one and only bath moses has ever recieved.)
anyway, i called it moses' birthday party because you know, he's seventeen today. but mostly i wanted to hang out and feed my friends some nice drinks and snacks and stuff. we also listened to records-- you know, real actual vinyl records-- which was fun. i played that sugarcubes record with the birthday song, and we talked about how the first elvis costello album was rumored to be backed by guys who played with huey lewis (which georg later confirmed to be true).
i attempted to make mojitoes and failed, as usual. i swear i will one day make a decent mojito. this is going to mean figuring out how to really get mint to grow and thrive in my garden. if mojitoes were made with sage, rosemary or garlic chives i'd be set. oh, or marjoram. find me a mixed drink made with marjoram and i can set you up. i suppose it would also help if i would bother to squeeze fresh limes.
we drank them anyway, though. they weren't too bad, they just weren't really mojitoes.
moses go to eat so much chicken that he threw up. IT WAS GREAT. i kind of forgot to give it to him gradually. i put a little plate down in front of him, looked away for a moment and 3/4 of it was gone. then soon it was all gone. and then a little came back. then it was a matter of seeing how many barf jokes we could work into the evening.
GOOD TIMES.

things i miss a lot
the starlite.
vis-art video. i'm amazed by how much i miss vis-art. i was going through new releases on netflix tonight and had a really visceral reaction while thinking i SHOULD be browsing these on the vis-art shelves and now i never can again.
my convertible. every so often i really miss her, like on warm summer nights. but it's good i sold her before gas prices got so high.

Hey Moses! It's your birthday!
Yep it's true, little dewd turns the big one-seven today.
And he seems to be fit as a fiddle and frisky to boot.
Yay Moses!!!

Disappointing.
Going back into some old podcasts, i found a Diane Rehm Show from 6/24/08 that was all about The Family:
"It's one of the most influential and least well known organizations in the country. The Family, also known as The Fellowship, consider themselves followers of Christ, and individuals responsible for changing the the world. An inside look at the power and history of The Family."
I was pretty excited to listen to it because I had read that Hillary Clinton is a member of The Family. In fact, that was one of the main reasons I became disillusioned with her during her campaign.
But I heard no mention of her during the discussion of The Family. I can't remember the date when she conceded but I think this was prior to that... if so, I can only imagine that they decided in advance not to bring that fact up during the discussion; disappointing, frankly.
There's plenty of disappointment to go around, really. Obama supports supreme court reversal of gun ban

fire and wolves
a dangerous weekend in newport news, with smoke filling the air (from the north carolina wildfire) and... well, i rode a roller coaster. the wolf-themed one. i saw no actual wolves, in part because there are no longer wolves kept in a preserve beneath the coaster, and in part because i was too busy screaming JASONNOTGOODNOTGOODNOTGOODOHGODNOTGOOD!
that was during the second half of the ride; the first half was fun, the second half was the kind of fun that doesn't feel fun until later.
we noticed that the napkins at the park claim that busch is the last major american-owned brewery or something like that. hah. not any more!
we have season passes, so next up: loch ness monster. happily, neither of us want to ride the griffin or the alpengeist. i'm kind of on the fence about apollo's chariot.
one coaster at a time.

Irony.
Shortly after I became engaged, the Fluevog Wedding Programme was discontinued.
I emailed them tonight to confirm, because it just disappeared off the web site. Indeed-- it is no longer.
Since I don't think I want to wear a traditional bridal color anyway, that's probably just as well... it just... kinda smarts.

young people! bah!
i'm supervising two student interns right now-- those of you who work with teenagers for a living, i don't know how you do it. they are running me ragged.
well, that, and staying up too late, and figuring out the logistics of a very complex project at work (which the aforementioned students are helping me with), and cleaning up lots of cat related messes (he's walking and talking fine, next goal is to get him using the fracking litterbox again, at least sometimes), absorbing lots of lots of information about how to plan a wedding, and selling off my worldly possessions.
don't get me wrong, i like our interns a lot and they are both very sharp. they're just verrry demanding. hilarious, but demanding.
oh. and my sole remaining grandparent-- my maternal grandmother-- appears to be declining. so there's that. but we'll worry about that when it happens.

weddings i have known - family weddings
as i've been researching weddings, and how to plan one, i've been reviewing weddings i've been to over the course of my life. i think it would be helpful to me to summarize them for future reference and to clarify my thoughts. and gee, what better place to do that than in my online journal? because i'm sure you really want to hear me rummage through my memories.
so this is part one, family weddings....

twice
this is the second time someone i knew from wxdu wound up on b2. this time it's someone i never knew well, although he seriously dated one of my friends from the station. he's being mentioned in a complimentary way.
the first time was someone i did know pretty well and he was mentioned on b2 in a very un-complimentary way.
so go figure.

intermittent productivity
my weekends have three states (with an occasional fourth):
- at home, highly productive, getting lots of things done.
- at home, cannot get self off of sofa.
- with J.
- occasionally, travelling.
it's the first two states that puzzle me. i don't know what makes one weekend productive, and another one not. it's frustrating. there's so much to do.
i did a lot today. it was very productive. large, non-perishable items left the house. small, perishable items entered it. my stereo once again produces sounds. my living room can once again be lived in. that sort of thing.
there are still boxes of things from mom's house to sort through. a few more furniture pieces that i know need to leave. then i can begin in earnest to pare down my own, original possessions to make room for J. not sure when he'll move down here, but i need to be ready when he does.
my way of working is to batch up a bunch of things that need to go. they get put in the living room, usually. then it could be weeks before i can actually get rid of them, so i live with all this crap in my space and forget that it will be easy to get rid of it once i have time.
so when a batch leaves, my house is suddenly wonderful again.
the more stuff you get rid of, the easier it gets. i like knowing something is going to a good home. i like having some breathing room in my house. i recommend it highly, if it's a procedure you're considering.

he walks!
so, of course as soon as i blog that i'm worried about mo, he starts getting up and walking across the house and whatever.
in unrelated news, the advantage to having a couple of 102/103 degree days in early june is that when it cools off to 87 and 90, you've acclimated and that feels okay.
I'm also selling three lovely pairs of shoes on ebay.

Yes, there is a reason I have a nasty attitude.
Open letter to the people who just came to my door:
You didn't look like scary people. I was pretty sure you just wanted to collect for a charity or give me information about your religion. After all, one of you did say "God bless you" as you turned to leave, and I had not just sneezed.
One of you asked, though, if there is a reason why I have a nasty attitude. I wish I'd had the presence of mind to say "Yes" instead of "Goodbye".
There are scary people who have come to my door. In fact, the scariest people who ever came to my door-- and tried some of the well-know tricks to be let into my house-- arrived while I was home with a broken arm, feeling particularly helpless. I remember I kept my axe near me for the rest of the day after that.
I think my nasty attitude was the only thing that kept me safe that day.
You're young, and maybe you don't yet realize that fear makes people act in particular ways.
I'm not friendly to strangers who come to my door.
I hope that answers your question.

pink toes
i've been feeling kind of demoralized by the state of the mo the last few days. he doesn't get up and walk on his own, ever, and when i get him up he'll only go a short distance, maybe eat for a couple of minutes, then lay down again. it's almost definitely the anemia, but today i started to wonder if he might just be giving up.
tonight though i realized his little toes are pink. not deep pink like i like to see, but definitely not all pale like they have been lately. they are pink and warm.
could be a fluke, but i feel a little more hopeful. hang in there little dewd. only nineteen days til you turn seventeen.

June is the new August.
There's a heat advisory in effect. It's not even officially summer yet. WTF.
Look, see, everyone thinks so.
Now that I actually have the time, it's too hot to mow and stuff after work. I may actually try to adjust my sleep schedule so I can get up early on the weekends and get yard work done in the morning. Maybe.

all mo, all the time
so, a little moses update. we went to the vet today. mo is doing okay. we're still in the valley of anemia but not getting any deeper. this seems to be making him very tired, which in turn makes him not want to get up and go get food and water. while i was gone over the weekend, my pet sitter didn't realize that he was eating and drinking abnormally low amounts and that she needed to bring the food and water to him to help him. this was just a SNAFU and no one's fault really. when i got home late sunday i could see that he was dehydrated and when i brought him his food, he ate hungrily. he was due for fluids and that pretty much took care of the dehydration right away. since then i've been bringing him his food and water if he won't go to it, and he's eating just fine.
monday evening i also decided to re-start the oral potassium just to see if it would help. i have seen in the past that it makes him stronger when he stands up and walks. i think it has helped and dr. c is okay with continuing that.
sadly, i think moses was the healthiest patient dr. c saw this morning. i guess if you log enough hours in a vet's waiting room, you're going to see stuff you'd rather not, and i have certainly logged more than my fair share of hours there. oh well. it's the circle of life, i guess. my sturdy little man is still hanging in there anyway, and i am starting to really be hopeful he's going to make it to his 17th birthday at the end of this month. only 24 days to go.

Engaged.
J and I got engaged a month ago.
I've been meaning to tell you all.
First, I had to tell certain people in person.
Then I was very busy.
Now I am telling you.
There's no date, no plan. We're discussing possible locations, but nothing has been decided.
He's actively seeking a job in this area. Know of a position in IT auditing? Please let us know.
The beautiful ring? J designed it, and then he carved the wax it was cast from. I will let him tell you more. It's amazing. So is he.

More notes.
- 12 hours to return - the difference may have been in the number and duration of stops.
- moses requires a certain level and/or type of attention or he won't eat well. now i know this. he's eating very well now so i know he still has an appetite.
- i think it's time for bed. the door installer is coming at 8am.
