Spotted in the Herald-Sun: Duke University seeks to create environment that allows interaction
"Larry Moneta, Duke’s vice president for student affairs, is frank when he describes the overall design of the ’70s-styled building.
"It was built in a period of time when someone thought that airports must look good," he said. "There is a lot of wasted space. "
ok, i will admit... the bryan center is dark and there's a lot of wood and stone. i love it. i don't see it as dated at all. i love the long, low, quiet spaces. the bathrooms are (ok, i realize this is an odd thing to say) perhaps my favorite public restrooms in durham. it makes me sad to think that this place which i really love is going to go away-- and perhaps also students will be even more likely to never leave campus.
"There’s more to add to the list of things the Bryan Center lacks: performance space, art galleries, offices for student clubs, areas to dine outdoors and, in general, a warm atmosphere."
The Bryan center in fact does have performance space (ADF has many performances there every year), art gallery space, and all of the student union offices are in the Bryan center, back behind the info desk.
