the picture says it all.

it was shifting great when i pulled out of the lot this afternoon, so i decided to try running some errands. after the second stop, the gears clenched up again. i finally got it completely stuck in reverse and it wouldn't crank at all.

called maxwell and they said they'd never heard of anything like it. me, i think it's the clutch. we'll see.

OHMYGOD!!! are you ok? are you traumatized? how terrible.

a car with that many miles... the clutch sounds like a reasonable explanation. i'm remembering when my clutch went out on the CRX... the way the mechanic diagnosed it over the phone was by asking me if the car shifted normally while the ignition was off. it did. when i turned the car on, though, nothing worked.

he said based on that alone it was definitely the clutch.

well, it all worked out fairly well so i'm not too traumatized. dave was still in cary, he ran one errand and then he arrived to pick me up right when the tow truck got there. thank GOD for cell phones.

the tow truck guy was able to pop it out of reverse by rocking the car back and forth. i'll have to remember that.

turning off the engine makes the problem completely go away (except when i got it stuck in reverse). so yeah. i'm thinking clutch.

poor spacepod! poor lisa!

When the clutch went out on little pig boy, I knew it because it started to feel mushy, like I had to push extra far to engage the clutch. I was in Raleigh and by the time I got back to Durham I couldn't get it into first or second gear at all. Higher gears were still OK though, so I hobbled home in 3rd.
