sleep

so i was reading this thing today about how to look one's best, and it said to get nine hours of sleep a night.

now, i know all of you are gasping, because i don't know anyone who actually gets a consistent eight hours, much less nine. at least, i don't think i do.

but this is one of those questions that interests me. how much sleep do you get? and how much is enough?

does getting enough sleep make up in increased productivity the time lost to sleep?

btw, i determined that in order to get nine hours a night, i'd have to kiss my social life, my hobbies, and my cat goodbye. you people will just have to live with looking at my less-than-fresh, sleep-deprived mug.

hey! i blogged about this very topic (umm, ignore the atkins snark....). there is a very lively debate among scientists about whether or not the productivity lost due to lack of sleep is made up by increased work hours. most europeans say no (so do most americans, actually), but there are these u.s. fringe scientists who think that sleep studies are mostly bunk and recommend a mere six hours a day. i don't have links for those folks, and, from the reading i've done, i'd tend to rank them with the people who don't believe in global warming.

i have the luxury of coming in late to work if i want/need to. so i always set my alarm according to my bed-time... i'll always make sure i get at least 7 hours. 8 if i'm feeling extra sleepy.

i don't know about productivity levels, but i feel like i'm a lot happier if i'm well-rested.

my technique is to make up the time in the morning if i need extra sleep. i prefer to have lots of time to wake up and shower and stuff, but i can pull it together in half an hour if i need to. i still don't get more than 6-7 hours typically, though, on weekdays.

I try to get 8 hours a night. It helps that my commute is across the hall, so I'm usually awake at 8 and working at 8:15 :)

I average 8-1/2 hours, but they're not always continguous (I like napping.) There's no question aobut productivity: I just don't care. If I don't get enough sleep, nothing happens and nothing matters. So I get enough sleep. Like Sarah, I also have the across-the-hall commute, and that's pleasant.
