online billpaying - follow up
I spoke with the online billpay folks at my bank today to gain a better understanding of how this mysterious process works. It turns out that some companies have signed up with my bank to receive electronic payements, and they get they were able to tell me which of my payees fall into this category. The other payees are cut a physical check which Wachovia mails out, and of course that can take a few days-- so for those folks I need to either mail a check myself or sign up for online bill paying from their end, to prevent things from being late.
The bills that are paid electronically:
- working assets long distance
- duke electric
- PSNC (gas)
- sprint pcs
- verizon
My mortgage was paid with a paper check, which means that the payment is late this month. I wish that had been clearer when I was setting this up, but I can set that up as an automatic payment through my mortgage company and it will never be late again. I hope.

I like online bill paying, but I don't like the idea of them drafting my bank account directly (call me crazy). The number of places that let you pay your bill automagically with a credit card is unfortunately very small (but it does save me three checks).

i agree about the spookiness, but i also know myself well enough to know that automatic payment of certain things-- mortgage, car loan-- is a good thing for me and my credit rating, because some months i don't pay my bills on time. it also saves on those pesky late fees.

ok, so a) your comment won't post right away because i have to approve it first and b) you might get a server error but your comment probably posted anyway and c) previewing doesn't work so i've removed the preview button.
