online bill paying

ok, my first adventure in online bill paying is under way!

my bank just started offering it for free to people with a particular kind of account, so i decided to go for it. they say that you can send payments to any company or individual that is in the US and has an address and phone number, except that you cannot pay taxes or court-ordered payments this way.

getting all of my bills entered was tedious and took about an hour-- but once i'd done that, it took maybe ten minutes to actually pay the bills. now i wait and see if all of the payments will actually work. i even sent a payment to my plumber.

if it all works correctly then i'll set my mortgage up as a recurring payment so i never have to worry about it. since the rest change monthly, and since recurring payments are kind of spooky anyway, i'll do everything else by hand every month.

it does feel weird not to be able to go back to my checkbook register and see my own comforting handwriting proving that i have paid a particular bill.. but the bill paying application gives you lots of confirmations and lists everything out on demand, and it will all get printed on my paper bank statements. still, it's spooky.
