it's just a number

while i was picking up the bookcases, my stepfather told me that they are going to disconnect the land line at the house.

i think my family has had that phone number since 1943. or some version of it.

this is a precursor, of course, to the eventuality of the house being sold. it does not appear that the third generation to inhabit the house will have the means to acquire it.

there is something about there being a number that a long lost friend or family member could call, and the person who answers knows who they're asking for and what happened to them and where to find them.

anyway. i'm glad i kept the duct tape phone.
