geek critique: veronica mars
(thanks to leesh for tipping me off to veronica mars!)
it's always dangerous when a tv show tries to portray geeks. for some reason, they never seem to find a real geek to consult during scriptwriting, and i don't know why this is, but it opens them up to the ridicule of all tech workers in the audience.
the x-files didn't do so bad. the lone gunmen worked in line mode and at least some of the things they did were actually plausible.
buffy had its moments, but its gaffes as well. it was the first time i ever heard google mentioned on tv, but the depiction of willow decrypting an encrypted file was completely hollywood.
so anyway, veronica mars strayed into this dangerous territory in this evening's re-run. my assessment:
- yes, college students could write a new game
- no, they would not write it on macs.
- yes, their room might look like that, but chances are it would be a lot messier and have some old pcs laying in pieces in the corners.
- the notion that three macs could generate enough heat to be felt through a cinderblock wall is extremely farfetched.
- yes, the inside of a dual g4 tower does look like that, and yes, she pulled a hard drive out of it, though i'm not positive the hard drive was in the correct location. but i'm willing to give them that.
on the whole, not too bad. nothing like 'mission impossible' or 'jurassic park'. egads.

oh foo, i thought they were showing the poker game rerun tongiht, and that's why i've been recommending it all over town. trust me that the show is usually way better than the episode you saw!!!

true, their geek is a bit off, but the show itself is nice and clever. I love the new glasses, BTW.
