Have you tried setting up Blacklist? http://www.jayallen.org/projects/mt-blacklist/

It helped me alot. Most spam gets filtered out by it and for those that get by, they're flagged for approval.

yes, i have been using blacklist for a while. when i upgraded yesterday to 3.121, they said that the new blacklist is included with the plugins-- but i have not been able to find instructions anywhere on how to actually get it running. sarah sent me some clues this morning and i will continue to beat away at it. i think i will have to run an install. the old blacklist cgi no longer works.

the version of mt i upgraded to was released officially about two days ago so i'm guessing i'm in the vanguard of people in this situation, and that's why it hasn't cropped up in any of the forums yet.

last night i changed the name of my comment cgi, figured out where in the perl configs i needed to change it, and within minutes the spammer had picked up the change and was spamming me again. i am currently trying to narrow in on how he is locating the new cgi. guess i don't want to publish a lot of details here right now, though i am still going on the assumption that he is using automation to locate and call the cgi, not that he is reading my blog.

ok, so a) your comment won't post right away because i have to approve it first and b) you might get a server error but your comment probably posted anyway and c) previewing doesn't work so i've removed the preview button.
